Book Recommendations for Intermediate Piano

Today I have some book recommendations for intermediate piano. I always like to teach using a couple of different books for each student. Here are some books I’ve been using recently:

Number 1: The Amadeus Anthems by Andrea Dow

This book is a fantastic addition to any music library, especially for older beginners. I genuinely enjoy every single song, and my students love playing them too! The pieces are based on melodies by W. A. Mozart and are beautifully arranged. They not only serve as excellent practice material but also shine in performances. One of my students recently played K. Track 525 at a recital, and it was a hit! I highly recommend this book for both learning and showcasing talent.

Number 2: 25 Progressive Pieces Op. 100 by Friedrich Burgmuller

I frequently use this book in my teaching. Many of the pieces are included on the NYSSMA lists, making it a staple resource for my students. This book is a fantastic way to introduce them to more advanced repertoire in a manageable way. I often use it as a stepping stone to help students transition into playing more complex Sonatinas

Number 3: Happy Time by Alexandre Tansman

This book is part of a three-book series. Although it is labeled as elementary, I find it suitable for more intermediate players as well. I highly recommend checking out all three books in the series. I prefer not to use any of them in isolation; instead, I like to incorporate several books at once. You could use all the books mentioned in this post. This approach allows students to learn a few pieces simultaneously, which enhances their overall development and keeps their practice engaging

This book is great to introduce your students to the easier Sonatinas. It has about seven Sonatinas by a variety of composers including Sonatinas by Cornelius Gurlitt and Albert Biehl.
