Teaching the Groups of Two and Three Black Keys (The Fun Way)
One of my favorite ways to teach toddlers the groups of two and three black keys on the piano is with foam sheets. I take two different colored foam sheets and cut rectangular shapes that fit perfectly on the group of two and three black keys. I make seven identical cutouts for each group; a total of 14 cutouts. I like to use one color for the two black keys and another color foam sheet for the three black keys.
This is a really fun way to teach toddlers to differentiate between the different groups on the piano. I demonstrate where they should go first and then I ask them to place them in the correct spot on the keyboard. It’s a nice way to start the lesson. Afterwards, you can jump into asking them to block their fingers on the groups of two across the piano and then block the groups of three.
Try it out with your little ones and let me know how it went!
Happy Teaching :)
